Black Ice Slide-Outs Are Dangerous – How To Prevent Them

January 18th, 2019 by

There is a lot of snow on the ground today as a result of the storm. The roads are as icy as ever and people sliding like they are in a hockey rink. You will be one of the lucky people privy to the knowledge of avoiding sliding on black ice.

Rule 1. Make sure to always gently steer the wheel in the same direction that those back wheels are sliding towards. Rule of thumb: left = left, right = right.

Rules 2. Never apply the brakes in such a situation. It will only make things worse. Brakes will only accelerate the side. The only time you should gently apply them is during a front wheel slide.

Rule 3. Gently steer the wheel. Do not jerk it. Take it easy.

Rule 4. Stay calm during the whole ordeal. Calmness can help you avoid oversteering and understeering. We at Honda of Stamford want you to be safe out there during the winter.
